It was summer of 1978 and just a month before I made my
trip back to Canada, Paul dropped by at my father's office. It
was where I worked part time while I pursued my studies at
the University of the East. Paul broke the news that he would
undergo a kidney transplant. I gave Paul some reassurances
that he will be okay and that he will survive it.
Despite his condition, Paul had a burning desire to go back to
Canada and pursue a better future. We were so disgusted
with the Marcos dictatorship. Prior to Law school, Paul also
studied medicine before switching studies. Paul was an
intellectual and an active Alpha Phi Omega and Order of
DeMolay member. He also collected designer perfumes
which he started in Toronto when Jovan came out with the
Musk. I used to ask him for some when I was at his place.
We spent a lot of time reminiscing and planning our return to
Canada; our friends at the University labeled us as “The
Canadian Wanna-Bes.” They got annoyed whenever Paul and
I would talk about Saskatchewan, Quebec, Alberta and the
cold Canadian winter endlessly. Paul was a gentle spirit and
a great friend. Before I left for Canada, Paul and I got together
and I was very concern that I might not see him again. He told
me not to worry because he is very optimistic that his brother’
s kidney would be a good match for him. In the month of
February 1980, I received a letter from my brother with the
clipping of Paul's obituary. It has been months since I
received any letter from him. We wrote each other often and
when his letters stopped coming in, I knew that I would not
see my dear friend again. Paul visited me in my dreams and I
had conversations with him and this went on for a year.
I went back to the Philippines in 1988 after 10 years in
Canada and I visited his family. I spoke to his mother and I
sat in the patio where we used to hang out with Josette, Egay,
and Yvonne in 1975 and 1976. Paul's mother told me how
Paul cherished his Canada World Youth experience. He
requested that our CWY group photo be placed on his chest.
Paul's mother told me she went to the Province of Zambales
in Central Luzon, and she had a vision of Paul. Paul told her
not to worry; he is very happy where he is, in fact he is
teaching children. Paul would have been 53 on May 29, 2007.
To you, my friend, I will hold you dearly in my heart, so will
your CWY friends.

during that time. He spoke various dialects so it was easy for
him to be endeared with the diverse group of people he met.
He played the guitar very well, sang and composed songs. He
even sent me a copy of music he composed and sang. He
was really good.
I read his column everyday. One day in 1978, the Daily Inquirer
announced the death of Bunny who died of aneurysm at a very
young age of 22. Shocked and saddened, I did not attend his
wake and funeral. I just wanted to remember him as the Bunny
Prieto I have known in the program. Later, I sent a letter to his
parents with the tape of his musical compositions.
After all these years, I still remember him, a quiet, talented and
a great person. I know that Bunny made the best of his life
while he was still with us.
And to you, Bunny......thanks for sharing with us your talents.
Thank you for being my friend!
