In 2001, Canada World Youth honored 30 Outstanding Alumni in celebrating its 30th Anniversary. There were several nominees and we were very proud to find that Rose Adapon-Turvey is one of them. As we compiled updates from our RP-CWY participants, we continue to discover the accomplishments of past participants who carried on the ideals of Canada World Youth, making a difference in the fields they have chosen, impacted the communities they lived in and those whose lives they have affected. Every month, we will honor these individuals. This month we salute: ROSE ADAPON-TURVEY International Development RP-CWY 1974-75

“For almost three decades, my Canada World Youth participation has been a great influence
in my graduate education, career path and international work. I was one of the participants in the
first Philippines-Canada World Youth Exchange Program in 1974-1975. In reflecting on my CWY
experience, it was not just a veritable socio-cultural immersion, it was a very educational and
meaningful youth development experience. My interest in international issues did not stop when I
completed the program in 1975. The program helped me to decide which road to take in terms of
my career path to get into the business of development. Through CWY, I found that people from
east to west and from north to south could work together in a cooperative way to address the
multi-faceted issues that beset the developing world. With the presence of CWY, there is no doubt
that Canada is in the forefront of world youth development.”
Rose received her doctorate degree in Geography from the University of Waterloo on 2001.
She is Assistant Professor at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario where she currently
teaches Geography and International Development. Prior to Nipissing, she was Assistant Professor
of International Studies at the University of New Brunswick (St. John). Her PhD advisor at the
University of Waterloo was Dr. Paul Parker, an RP-CWY 1975-76 alumnus. Prior to becoming an
academic, Rose was an international public servant for various UN funded projects administered
by UNDP, UNOPS and UN Volunteers. She has applied much of her skills and knowledge as
former planner with the Government of the Philippines when she worked as Advisor in a number
of projects in countries like Kiribati and Samoa in the South Pacific.
