       [ As we compiled updates from our RP-CWY participants, we continue to discover the accomplishments of past participants
 
        who carried on the ideals of Canada World Youth, making a difference in the fields they have chosen, impacted the
 
        communities they lived in and those whose lives they have  affected.  Every month, we will honor these individuals. This month we salute: ]

     
     
KARL FLECKER   (Global Activist)
   RP-CWY 1981-82    

               Karl Flecker is considered one of the world's leading experts and advocates on the issue of
       
water.  He is currently a board member and director of the Water Program (volunteer) of the
       
Canadian-based  Polaris Institute, an organization that among other activist issues is challenging
       
the growth of bottled water industry.  The Polaris Institute is a research/ education and advocacy
       
organization that is committed to assisting citizens' movements around the world fight for
       
democratic social change in an age of corporate driven globalization.

                But his day job,---at least "until the kids get into post secondary and pay their own freight",
       
he quips, is as National Director, Anti-Racism and Human Rights Department of the Canadian
       
Labour Congress.

               
Karl has a strong background in adult education and training, as well as considerable experience working with equity-seeking
        groups.  Karl has written numerous articles on trade agreements, workers' rights and equity issues.  He has worked with policy
        
research and action organizations like the Polaris Institute and worked internationally with community, union and social justice        
         
groups in South Africa, India, Asia and the Americas who are creatively addressing the challenges that are impacting worker and
        
community rights.

        Among his many roles:

        *Father of two Gen Y kids threatening to go to the most expensive post secondary schools they can find;

        *DIY home renovator with the longest running projects ever recorded

        *Writer, researcher and traveller who often is on the sideline cheering on his wife as she runs marathons.  He is the one with the
 
        box of poutine. (French fries.)
